What tonka bean is
Tonka beans are the seeds of a tropical tree. They're rich in coumarin, which smells of vanilla, almond, hay and a little caramel. Perfumers use it to add sweetness and warmth to the base of a fragrance.
Coumarin is one of the substances that EU rules require brands to list on labels above a set concentration, because it can cause allergic reactions in some people. If you have sensitive skin, check the ingredient list.
Where you'll find it
In our data, the tonka originals with the most clones are Kilian Angels' Share (44), Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille (25), Tom Ford Lost Cherry (24), Carolina Herrera Good Girl (18) and Chanel Coco Mademoiselle (18).
It's the quiet workhorse of the gourmand family, so if you like those scents you likely already like tonka.
What clones do with it
Tonka clones usually reproduce the sweetness well, since the materials are cheap. The common complaint is that the result is denser and sweeter than the original, and that it doesn't suit hot weather.
How we picked
The list above ranks clones by match score. We kept clones with a current Amazon listing and a match score of at least the number noted below, and allowed one clone per designer original so one fragrance can't fill the list. The minimum match score is 80%. A fragrance counts as tonka if tonka appears anywhere in the original's notes.
Scores measure scent similarity, not bottle quality or wear time. Read the notes on each card too.
