Ambergris is a rare substance that sperm whales produce, and it was once a prized perfume ingredient. Ambroxan reproduces its warm, mineral, skin-like smell from other materials, so it's cheaper and avoids the supply problems of the natural version.

It's very diffusive, which is why fragrances built around it project strongly and last a long time.

Some people find ambroxan clean and glowing. Others find it harsh, headache-inducing or oddly absent, because individual noses vary in how well they detect it. If a fragrance gives you a headache after a few minutes, wearers often blame ambroxan.
